Release notes 1.0.2

Release 1.0.2 · 25 October 2026

Finding and adding games

  • Fixed: a game a friend entered by hand no longer shows Add to shelf and Add to wishlist buttons that could not work.

Friends

  • Fixed: accepting a friend's tagged play no longer copies an expansion you cannot see onto your play.
  • Fixed: screen readers now name the buttons in the QR invite view correctly.

Your shelf

  • Write private notes on any game, only you can see them. The CSV export of your shelf and wishlist and the BoardGameGeek import bring your notes along.

Logging plays

  • Log another round: after saving a play, log the next round with the same game, date and players already filled in. A friend you tagged is told once. Several rounds from one friend show as a single invite you can accept with one tap.

Knight membership

  • Knight members can now manage or cancel their membership from Profile.

Release notes 1.0.1

Release 1.0.1 · 11 October 2026

Look and feel

  • The web app now lives at my.gamesquire.app. Old links still work. Sign in once on the new address.
  • Swipe left and right to move through the app tour.
  • You can now choose news updates while setting up the app.

Finding and adding games

  • An empty shelf now shows how to add your first game, and a shelf search with no match offers to look the game up in all games.

Friends

  • Invite a friend from more places: after adding your first games, while logging a play with someone new, from Home and on an empty Social screen.

The Herald, your rules assistant

  • Rate the Herald's answers with a thumbs up or down.

Release notes 1.0.0

Release 1.0.0 · 10 October 2026

The Herald, your rules assistant

  • Meet the Herald, your rules assistant. Tap Ask the Herald about the rules on a game's page: it answers from the game's own rulebook, names the page and tells you when the rulebook does not say. Everyone gets 5 questions a month; Knight membership gives your household more questions and longer rulebooks.
  • Tell the Herald which edition you own and which expansions you play with and it reads the matching rulebooks. A BoardGameGeek import brings your editions over.
  • No rulebook for your game? Tap "Find it for me" and we look for the publisher's official one or upload the PDF yourself for review.

Learn to play

  • Learn to play: step-by-step guides to setting up and playing a game, written from its rulebook with page references. Guides for the 200 most-owned games are ready. Knight members can ask for any other game and usually get it within a day.

Knight membership and tips

  • Knight membership is here: more Herald questions and longer rulebooks, more box scans and score photos, How to play guides, score sheets, Insights, Challenges and the full Year's Tally, shared with your whole household. Find it on your profile. Tracking your games, logging plays and friends stay free, with no ads.
  • Out of Herald questions? Buy 10 more (25 with Knight membership). They never expire and are only used once your monthly questions run out.
  • Leave a tip from Profile to support GameSquire. A tip unlocks nothing; it helps keep GameSquire free and without ads.
  • Not sure where to start? Take the app tour: a short tour of the whole app, saying what stays free and what Knight membership adds. New accounts start with it while setting up. Retake it any time from Home or your profile.

Make it yours

  • Colour themes: with Knight membership, choose Midnight walnut, Sage, Lavender or Calm honey on your Profile to make GameSquire look like your table, in light and dark. On the free plan you can try each theme while you are on that screen.
  • Change the app icon on your home screen: with Knight membership, pick Midnight, Sage, White, Lavender or Calm honey from your Profile.
  • A badge next to your name that your friends see, with Knight membership. It is on when you join and you can switch it off in your Profile.
  • New drawn avatars replace the emoji icons, you can change yours from your profile. Knight members will have additional options. Your avatar shows next to your name in friend lists, your household and groups.

Finding and adding games

  • Scan a game's barcode to add it, free for everyone: on Add a Game, tap Scan a game. Every match you confirm helps the next player. On web, you can type the barcode or use a scanner.
  • You can now also take a photo of the box, even of several boxes at once: GameSquire finds the games for you. 5 scans on Squire (Free), 150 a month with Knight membership.

Scores

  • Log a score for each player in Log a Play. The highest score gets the winner's star, ties are easy and your best score shows on the game's page. Scores from BoardGameGeek imports now show as real scores.
  • Or fill the scores in from a photo of the score sheet: you check the names and numbers first and the photo is not kept. 5 photos on Squire (Free), 150 a month with Knight membership.
  • With scores you also see your average, best and worst per game and your records against each person you play with. For games where the lowest score wins, flip the switch on the game's page.
  • Score sheets, with Knight membership: in Log a Play switch from "Totals" to "By category", name the categories you score a game by (for example birds, bonus cards and eggs for Wingspan) and each player's total adds up for you. More than 90 games come with starter categories and a score photo fills the sheet. Open it from a game's page or from Log a Play. Typing a single total stays free for everyone.

Friends

  • A tagged play stays one play: changes by you or the friend who logged it show in both logs, your notes stay your own and logging the same play twice is caught and linked.
  • On a friend's shelf, tap "Owned by both" to see the games you both own.
  • Tap your username card on Social to copy your profile link.
  • You can now block a player or report them to us from their profile.

Stats

  • Stats opens with a short summary of your plays, games, time played and win rate, with People you play with right below it.
  • Stats now shows your win rate, how much of your shelf you have played, your top 5 games, your co-op and solo record, weeks in a row and plays per month.
  • All time now also counts games marked as played without a logged play.
  • People you play with lists everyone from your plays and who won, game by game. Link a name to a friend or to yourself. If your BoardGameGeek plays do not say which player is you, Stats will ask.
  • A friend's Stats tab opens with your head-to-head, then their own stats. Each game's page shows your record on it.
  • Household and group stats, with Knight membership: see who in your household plays and wins most, also for a saved friend group. Sharing your play counts with your household is on by default and each member can turn it off in the Household screen. A group counts only plays that tag other members.
  • Insights on Stats: wins and plays by number of players, game weight, category, day and month, how long plays last and the games you rated highly but never played. Free players see one number. Knight membership opens the rest.
  • Challenges, on Stats: 10x10, play every game on your shelf, a yearly plays target you set yourself and a weekly streak. Everyone sees their own numbers. Knight membership adds progress bars and the target. Only dated plays count and every challenge starts again on 1 January.
  • The Year's Tally: from Stats, see your year at the table as cards you can share. Everyone gets a card with plays, hours and games played. Knight membership adds your most played games, first plays, busiest month, longest streak, win rate and the five people you played with most. A finished year is ready straight away and the current year opens on 1 December.

Where you played and what you paid

  • Where you played and what you paid: add a place to any play in Log a Play (your recent places are a tap away) and the price of a game on its page. Both are private. Nobody else sees where you played and a price stays with you unless you share it with your household (Profile, Prices and places). Prices stay in your own currency. BoardGameGeek play imports bring their places and your shelf export and import include prices.
  • Use my location in the Where box of a play: GameSquire suggests where you are or a place you used before nearby. It reads your location only when you tap and the spot stays on your phone. Only the place name you save goes with your play.
  • Places and cost, on Stats, with Knight membership: plays and hours by place, what each game cost per play and per hour, the value of your shelf and which games have paid for themselves. Recording places and prices stays free and everyone sees their own totals so far.
  • Add what you paid right when you add a game: an optional line under it takes the price in one tap. Nothing is asked when you import a collection. After ten plays with no price saved, Places and cost offers once to add prices to your five most played games.

Look and feel

  • When a screen cannot load (your shelf, friends, household, trending or a friend's shelf) it now has a Try again button. Error messages are in plain words and the accept and decline buttons on requests are easier to hit. The cursor and text highlight in text boxes are gold.
  • Favorites are now a heart instead of a star, on My Shelf and on your household's shelf.
  • My Shelf, Home, Stats and friends' shelves open faster and use far less mobile data: your games download again only when something changed.
  • With larger text, a long game name at the top of its page stops at two lines. Tap it to see all of it.
  • After you save a play, GameSquire may ask you to rate it in your app store, at most a few times a year. You can always skip it.
  • New in Profile, Notifications: News and new releases. Turn it on to hear from us a few times a year, by notification or email, about new releases and what is new in GameSquire. It is off until you turn it on. Never ads.

Fixes

  • Fixed: with larger text, several buttons, labels and hints split words or were cut off, in message boxes, Log a Play, Social, Profile, game pages and My Shelf, also at text size 1.3 and 1.4.
  • Fixed: a game you played but never shelved said Shelf of shame and so did one you shelved after already playing it. Both now say Played.
  • Fixed: household games now count as yours and a friend's household games as theirs, so everyone in a household sees the same games in common with a friend.
  • Fixed: accepting a tagged co-op or solo play lost whether it was won or lost.
  • Fixed: a phone you signed out of could keep getting your notifications. Now only the account signed in on it gets them.
  • Fixed: Social could stop opening after you removed a friend who had tagged you in a play.
  • Fixed: a game could turn into Unknown game after one failed BoardGameGeek check. It is now checked twice and repairs itself.
  • Fixed: Back on Log a Play now asks before throwing away unsaved changes.
  • Fixed: Stats hid your games until you logged your first play.
  • Fixed: after rejoining a household, Home could still ask whether to keep the games from when you left.
  • Fixed: Time played showed 0m instead of a dash and a single length or player count showed as 15–15 or 2–2.
  • Fixed: with the keyboard open, the first tap on a game's page or on the release notes only closed the keyboard.

Release notes 0.3.2

Release 0.3.2 · 27 September 2026

Friends

  • Share a friend invite directly through the phone's share menu or by copying the link to your profile. You can also send this to friends without GameSquire to get them on board. Found on your profile and in social.
  • Create a QR code for a friend to scan. When it's scanned, you're friends immediately, no invite needed. You can also show the code to friends without GameSquire to get them on board. Found on your profile and in social.
  • Tag friends when you log or edit a play. Tagged friends can accept or reject the play. When accepted, it will show in their play stats as if they logged it themselves.
  • You now get a notification, by push and email, when someone accepts your friend request, following your Friend requests notification settings.
  • A friend's play log now keeps loading as you scroll and friends' shelves, play logs and stats open faster.
  • A friend's shelf now says how many games they have and how many you both own (for example: 4 games, you both own 1), following your search and filters. The group view's game count follows your filters too.
  • Sending a friend request by username now confirms it was sent. The request stays under Sent requests until it is accepted or you cancel it, and sending it again tells you it is already on its way.

Finding and adding games

  • Trending and Add a Game's search results show which games are already yours: a gold check for a game you own (on your shelf or your household's), a bookmark for one on your wishlist, and a + only on games you have neither. With Add to shelf selected, a wishlisted game keeps its + so you can move it onto your shelf.
  • The add button on My Shelf now says Add a game instead of being a bare plus. On the Wishlist tab it adds straight to your wishlist.

Look and feel

  • On a phone or tablet, the Mood & filters panel (My Shelf, a friend's shelf, a group) and Trending's Filters panel now slide open and shut smoothly and fold away when you scroll. On a tablet they now start folded, as on a phone, so your games get the whole screen.
  • Didn't feel like the continue card was adding anything. I removed it from the home screen so that it's cleaner.

Fixes

  • Fixed: on Add a Game, tapping a search result added the game whether you meant to or not. It now opens the game so you can look it over first; the + on the right of the row still adds it straight away.
  • Fixed: collections of more than 1,000 games stopped at 1,000 on My Shelf, Home's game count, the household shelf, friends' shelves and the shelf export, and Most played and Last played sorted wrongly past 1,000 plays. Stats, including comparing with a friend, counted only your latest 3,000 plays. Everything now counts in full and Stats opens faster.
  • Fixed: disbanding a household with several hundred shared games or more failed with an error. It now works and every member is asked about the shared games.
  • Fixed: a search on Add a Game, Trending or Log a Play could show a red error when a result was a game whose year BoardGameGeek does not know. Those results now simply show no year.
  • Fixed: adding a game from its page, for example from Trending, left the Added date blank until you opened the game again.
  • Fixed: tapping a game in Trending showed its loading circle where the + is, so it looked like the game was being added. The circle now shows over the game's picture.
  • Fixed: on Trending, some two-digit ranks such as 43 broke onto a second line.
  • Fixed: importing your BoardGameGeek collection could fail when BoardGameGeek had no added date for some of your games.
  • Fixed: phones uses a larger than standard font size now render the app correctly.
  • Fixed: a group view briefly said 0 games, and Owned by everyone (0), while it was still loading.
  • Fixed: a filter you set on Trending or a shelf only turned gold; it now shows what you picked, for example Players: 4 or Difficulty: Light. With large text, long filter names wrap instead of being cut off.
  • Fixed: Log a Play said Nothing on your shelf yet while a big shelf was still loading. It now shows a loading circle until your games are in.
  • Fixed: the friend count on Home could keep showing the old number for a while after you made a new friend.
  • Fixed: on Android, pressing Back while the keyboard is open for a search box now closes the keyboard first. A second Back leaves the screen.
  • Fixed: on Android, a message box such as Sign out or a panel that slides up from the bottom (such as Add a friend or Edit profile) now dims the whole screen. The strips at the very top and bottom used to stay bright in light mode.

Release notes 0.3.1

Release 0.3.1 · 19 September 2026

  • The Export & Import screen now opens with the BoardGameGeek import, and the CSV file options are tucked under a heading you can tap to open. The switches for choosing what to bring in from BoardGameGeek also line up properly now.
  • A game you enter by hand is now yours alone. Friends still see it on your shelf and your household can still play it, but nobody else can add it to their own shelf.
  • If two people enter a game by hand with the same title, each of them now gets their own copy.
  • The BoardGameGeek step when you first sign up now offers the same import as the Export & Import screen, including your logged plays, with the same switches for choosing what to bring in.
  • Fixed: importing from BoardGameGeek or a file said a game was added but never put it on your shelf, if you had only rated, timed or played it before, such as a game from your household's shelf.
  • When a newer version of the app is available in TestFlight or Google Play, you now get a message over the app with an update button, instead of a card on the home screen.
  • The Terms of Use and Privacy Policy links now open the latest version on gamesquire.app.

Play timer and expansions

Release 0.3.0 · 12 September 2026

  • There is a new "Start a play" button on a game's page, and on the Log a Play screen. It starts a timer that keeps running while you play, even if you close the app, and you can pause it for a break so the time you were not playing is left out. Stopping it saves the play with the time it took, and offers to fill in who played, notes and expansions. Starting it on an expansion asks whether to time the base game instead, with the expansion added to the play.
  • A running play timer now shows on your lock screen with the game's box art (on Android as a notification), and you can pause, resume or stop it from there. Stopping opens the game and asks before it logs the play.
  • You can copy your own profile link from Profile by tapping your card, and opening someone else's takes you straight to them, ready to add as a friend.
  • The button for adding a friend on the Social screen now says "Add a friend" instead of being just an icon.
  • Filter dropdowns with a short list of choices now always show every option. The Sort list used to be cut off just below the last option on Android if your phone's text size was anything above the default, with too little room to scroll down to it.
  • On a phone, opening the filters now tucks the Mood row away while you choose. Without that, the list of choices ran off the bottom of the screen on smaller phones causing the last option to be unreachable.
  • You can now record which expansions were at the table when you log a play, instead of logging the base game and each expansion separately. It stays one play, so your play counts and time played stay right. The expansions you own are one tap away, and you can search for any other expansion of the game, like the one a friend brought. You can add expansions to a play you logged earlier by editing it.
  • Playing with an expansion now takes that expansion off your shelf of shame too and an expansion's own page shows how many plays of its base game you used it in.
  • If you pick an expansion as the game you played, GameSquire now offers to log the base game with that expansion ticked instead, so the evening counts towards the game you actually played.
  • If your phone has an older version of GameSquire than the one in Google Play or TestFlight, the Home screen now says so and takes you there to update.
  • If the app has an update waiting the first time you open it after installing, it now says so on the loading screen instead of just taking a moment longer. It still gives up quickly and opens if your connection is slow.

Release notes

Release 0.2.1 · 9 September 2026

  • Release overview banner added & 'What's new' in 'Profile'.
  • Every settings row in your profile now has its own icon.
  • You can now import your logged plays from BoardGameGeek, alongside your collection. Importing twice is safe: plays already brought over are not duplicated.
  • A BoardGameGeek import now asks what you want to bring in, so you can leave out your wishlist, your ratings or your plays.
  • Games imported from BoardGameGeek now keep the date you added them there, instead of all showing up as added today.
  • Games you have played on BoardGameGeek no longer land on your shelf of shame. Re-run the import to fix an earlier one.
  • My Shelf and your wishlist can now be sorted by BoardGameGeek rank.
  • Importing your BoardGameGeek collection no longer fails if you own a game whose title is a number, like 5211 or 1984. One of those anywhere in your collection used to stop the whole import.
  • Importing plays now saves them as it goes and tells you how many are saved, instead of appearing to hang at the end. If it is interrupted, everything already saved is kept and you can run it again for the rest.
  • Your BoardGameGeek username is remembered, so you do not have to type it again.
  • Every sort on My Shelf can now run either way round. Tap the sort you are already on to reverse it: newest or oldest first, A to Z or Z to A, most or least played.
